A National Congress of the Ogoni people organised under the auspices of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) was held at the Peace and Freedom Centre, Bori-Ogoni on Saturday, August 8, 2015. It was attended by over eight (8) thousand Ogonis including traditional rulers, academics, traders, farmers, fisher folk, professionals, youths and women.

A National Congress of the Ogoni people organised under the auspices of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) was held at the Peace and Freedom Centre, Bori-Ogoni on Saturday, August 8, 2015. It was attended by over eight (8) thousand Ogonis including traditional rulers, academics, traders, farmers, fisher folk, professionals, youths and women.

It was convened to brief and stimulate discussions on the approval by the Nigerian Government regarding fast-tracking implementation of remediation and restoration of the hydrocarbon degraded Ogoni environment; deliberate on the security challenges and other developmental issues affecting the Ogoni people and chart a way forward.
 
The National Congress of the Ogoni people at the end of deliberations issued the following communique:
 
1.         The Congress profoundly welcomed and congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Government of Nigeria for approving the creation of governing structures for the implementation of recommendations of the UNEP report on Ogoniland. The step, congress agreed, reflects commitment to the full implementation of the report as promised the Ogoni people during the President’s electioneering visit to Ogoniland in January, 2015.
 
2.         Congress called on the President to ensure that all mechanisms necessary for the urgent commencement and comprehensive remediation and restoration of the devastated Ogoni environment are put in place without delay.
 
3.         Whilst appreciating the intervention of the President on the UNEP Report, congress called on the President to appoint Ogoni sons and daughters into positions of responsibility in his government as demanded in the Ogoni Bill of Rights and reiterated in the recent letter to the President by the Ogoni People.
 
4.         Congress decried the present situation of insecurity in Ogoni communities and called on traditional rulers to ensure the protection and security of the communities.
 
5.         Congress called on the Federal Government and the state government to address the growing restlessness and inhospitable condition in which the people of Kporghor, Gio and other coastal communities in the Tai Local Government Area of Ogoni had been subjected to since their invasion and attack by the neighbouring Okrika, which had led to huge displacement and turned thousands into internally displaced persons.
 
6.         Congress noted with satisfaction, the leadership of the MOSOP President, Mr. Legborsi Saro Pyagbara and unanimously passed a vote of confidence on him. It called on the Ogoni people to give him their maximum support and cooperation.
 
7.         Congress called on all Ogoni sons and daughters to desist from divisive actions but work concertedly to protect the collective interest of the Ogoni people especially relating to the upcoming Ogoni remediation and restoration exercise.
